Flights are back from 1st July 2024!

An introduction…

The British overseas territory of Saint Helena is one of the world’s most remote islands, located in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Construction of the Islands first airport was completed in 2016, before that point - Saint Helena was only accessible via a 5 day boat journey from South Africa. Now, the island has weekly flights to the UK & Africa.

Unique

The islands remote location, strong South Atlantic trade winds and dramatic terrain make Saint Helena a unique & sometimes challenging destination to operate from.

Extensive training, proving flights & weather monitoring had to be carried out after the airport was opened to establish the operational capabilities of the airport and the types of aircraft that would be suited to fly from Saint Helena.

Airbus A319

Saint Helena is more than 4,000 nautical miles from London Stansted Airport with an average flight time of 9 hours 40 minutes. Previously you would expect a wide body aircraft to be used on this length of route, but the airport is not suitable for larger aircraft and as it is a very niche destination - using such aircraft would not be sustainable.

This is why the Airbus A319 operated by MANX was selected to operate this service.

BRITISHJET is the only UK carrier to operate regular scheduled services between Saint Helena and the UK.

This aircraft can fly over 3,000 nautical miles and with its enhanced performance and reduced capacity - it is ideal for our Saint Helena services.

Departing London Stansted airport, the aircraft is able to operate non stop to Accra where after a brief fuel stop - it continues to Saint Helena. London bound services also make a short fuel stop in Accra.

Route contingency

Saint Helena is susceptible to strong winds & low visibility due it’s location and terrain. This can sometimes cause performance issues, because of this - we have several contingency plans in place.

Our Crew will look at the most up to date weather forecasts and observations on the day and inform customers if there is a possibility of journey disruption.

On rare occasions, we may postpone the service to wait for weather improvement. This means the flight will not depart either London or Saint Helena until the weather is within limits. We will keep customers up to date on the new schedule and further changes.

If the weather deteriorates in Saint Helena significantly whilst the flight is already en route, it may be necessary to make a longer ground stop in Accra to wait for weather improvement. Due to legal limitations on Crew operating hours - the journey may not be able to resume on the same day. In these circumstances, the continuation of the flight will be postponed until the following day and all customers will be accommodated during the unplanned night stop.
